Americans are spending more on vegetable gardens: $1.4 billlion dollars in 2007.

The figure represents a 25 percent increase over the amount of money spent on vegetable gardens in 2006.

Now some West Coast business, MyFarm and City Garden Farms, are poised to turn a passion for vegetable patches into profits.

City Garden Farm, started earlier this year by friends Martin Barrett and Dan Bravin, employs Small Plot Intensive (SPIN)  farming, a method that applies intensive organic agriculture techniques to sub-acre plots of land, to grow an abundance of produce in Portland backyards.  Barrett and Bravin now have about a quarter of an acre of land planted throughout the city, with the goal of eventually having one full acre in production.

Land donors receive as much organic produce as they like, and Barrett says they are typically excited to participate in the program.

San Francisco’s MyFarm, also started in early 2008, takes a somewhat different approach, and changes customers for organic gardening services.  San Francisco residents with unused land suitable to organic farming can sign up with MyFarm to either grow just enough food for themselves or become owner-members and allow MyFarm to grow enough produce on their land to sell some as well.

How it Works:

MyFarm is a decentralized urban farm. We grow vegetables in backyard gardens throughout the city. By increasing local food production we are creating a secure and sustainable food system. Using organic practices we strive to grow the best tasting most nutritious vegetables. We ask what vegetables you like and grow them just for you.

Have a backyard?

We install and maintain beautiful backyard vegetable gardens. An installation can be as small as 4'x4' or can completely transform your backyard into a food forest. Each week we maintain your garden and harvest the produce in its peak, leaving a basket of fresh veggies on your doorstep. As a member, you also share in the abundance produced by other backyard gardens, increasing the diversity in your basket.

Don't have a backyard?

We offer a CSA style box of fresh local vegetables each week. Your vegetables will be grown in a backyard garden near your home. We offer two sizes. Full Box - $35 per week – Good for two people or small family Half Box - $25 per week – Good for one person

Our Services include:

  • Initial garden set up and weekly follow up to keep your space growing.
  • Organic techniques to grow nutrient rich vegetables.
  • CSA style delivery of a weekly box of very local edibles.
  • Permaculture techniques implemented to beautify in a
    sustainable way.
  • Garden design consultations and networking with high quality suppliers.

We are City Garden Farms: an innovative series of urban produce farms located in beautiful Portland, Oregon.

We love farming and we love Portland! We have combined our passion for both by farming a diverse group of sub-acre plots in and around Portland to provide you with ultra-local, ultra-fresh, ultra-sustainable produce.

We're reclaiming and farming underutilized urban land...the yards, lots and plots we all see everyday as we walk, bike and (gasp!) drive around the city.  Growing food on the land where we live just makes sense to us.  We believe in 'common sense for the common good'.

We offer our produce at local farmers markets, through our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) subscription and even via an A La Carte ordering service on our website. http://www.citygardenfarms.com

Our CSA program offers our customers an opportunity to buy a 'subscription' to a plentiful harvest of fresh, local, seasonal produce each growing season.  By buying for a whole season subscribers stabilize their fresh produce costs at this time of rising fuel prices and subsequently unstable food prices.

Our goal is to contribute to the sustainability of our local economy and food security of our community. We want to foster meaningful relationships with our customers, partners and local businesses to the benefit of us all.
